Feed Your Head Books is going to be hosting an event in October dubbed Knit for A Cause. Local artist Joshua Gerloff will be leading a knitting group with the aim of producing afghans to donate to premature babies and families in need at NSMC Salem Hospital's Special Care Nursery. The group will meet for four consecutive Sundays in October (10/1, 10/8, 10/15, and 10/22) from 2 - 4 pm. During the first week, instruction will be provided for those people who have never knitted before. The lesson will include casting on, casting off, and the basic knit stitch. During weeks two and three, squares, which will form the base of the afghans, will be created. If time allows, further instruction may also be provided, including demonstrating different stitches, how to create tassels, switching from one color of yarn to another, and more! During the final week, the squares will be joined together to form the actual baby afghans. Knitters of all experience levels are encouraged to attend. If knitters have their own needles and yarn, they're welcome to bring them. If not, yarn and needles will be provided at no cost for in-store use. Knitters can feel free to attend as few or as many sessions as they'd like.
For more info., interested individuals can e-mail Joshua at firstname.lastname@example.org.

Seeing as it's kind of chilly today here in DC and seeing that I'm learning how to crochet and seeing as I LOVE giving to people I had a really great idea!!!
I thought that come mid october a whole bunch of us could have a huge stitch and bitch to make scarfs, mittens and hats for some homeless shelters in the nova/dc area! I'm posting this in every community I'm a member of that has anything to do with crafts, or DC so leave me some comments and let me know what you think of the idea!
The Naughty Knitting & Kinky Crochet site is finally up! Naughty Knitting & Kinky Crochet Fundraiser website
Please please please pass it along to anyone you know who does fiber arts or any BDSM-related groups you think might even remotely be interested. I'd really like to see last year's donation doubled for this year.
I'm recruiting for volunteers to make specialty items for a vendor fair in November. Details are on the website.
I'll be posting information about Craft Nights in Portland, OR, soon - socials where we can work together, and share materials and ideas for items for the fundraiser.
Live outside of the Portland/Vancouver area? E-mail me about mailing in finished items.
My dad and stepmom are the chairpeople for the Morristown (NJ) Relay for Life. Nancy has asked that I pass this along to all who knit (since I don't).
Relay For Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs of your American Cancer Society. During the event, teams of people gather at schools, fairgrounds, or parks and take turns walking or running laps. Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times.
The shawls are given out to cancer survivors at the Morristown Relay For Life on May 19-20, 2006 (an overnight event) where we honor cancer survivors and celebrate the grand team fundraising effort that has taken place over the previous several months. It is a huge community rally/relay where we raised $195,000 last year and honored over 100 cancer survivors. We hope to honor over 150 cancer survivors this year. To be fair, we like our special gifts to be exactly uniform at least in design. Over the last two relay events one volunteer hand made craft gifts for each survivor and they were all uniform at least in design. Since the shawl has been done before in other parts of the country exactly like this, we chose to mimic success.
